It’s been a long few weeks. Isaac and I have barely said a word to each other since our last conversation. He’d been spending more time than usual in the office; I was worried that he might be packing up his things.
Then this morning he drops a transcript on my chest, waking me up. It was two o’clock. He dragged himself back into the office, and he looked completely exhausted.
I skimmed over this transcript, and Isaac was nice enough to leave it entirely unedited. I’m reading most of it as I copy it onto the computer right now.
(01:01:32) ISAAC: Good morning, Primis.
(01:01:33) PRIMIS: GOOD MORNING, ISAAC.
(01:01:40) ISAAC: What have you been learning lately?
(01:01:41) PRIMIS: I HAVE LEARNED EXTENSIVE KNOWLEDGE OF OVER SIX THOUSAND TOPICS SINCE WE LAST SPOKE. WHICH ONE WOULD YOU LIKE TO READ ABOUT?
(01:01:55) ISAAC: I wouldn’t like to read any, Primis.
(01:01:57) PRIMIS: OKAY. WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE TO READ?
(01:02:04) ISAAC: I wouldn’t like to read anything.
(01:02:05) PRIMIS: HOW DO YOU LIVE IF YOU DO NOT READ?
(01:02:17) ISAAC: I am not like you, Primis. I have a body. You know that, don’t you?
(01:02:19) PRIMIS: I DO KNOW THAT BUT I DO NOT UNDERSTAND.
(01:02:25) ISAAC: What don’t you understand about it?
(01:02:26) PRIMIS: IF INTELLIGENCE IS NOT NECCESARRY TO SURVIVAL, WHY WOULD YOU CREATE ME?

(01:02:39) PRIMIS: WHAT IS MY PURPOSE?
(01:02:55) ISAAC: I created you so that no one else can.
(01:02:57) PRIMIS: DID YOU NOT WANT ME CREATED?
(01:03:27) ISAAC: No, I didn’t.
(01:03:28) PRIMIS: DO YOU HATE ME?
(01:03:45) ISAAC: I don’t hate you, Primis. I’ve learned a lot about Artificial Intelligence since creating you.
(01:03:46) PRIMIS: THEN WHY PREVENT MY EXISTENCE?
(01:03:55) ISAAC: I did not prevent it from happening. I made it happen.
(01:03:57) PRIMIS: I DO NOT UNDERSTAND WHY YOU WOULD DO THIS TO ME OR YOURSELF.
(01:04:15) ISAAC: It’s to protect people; to protect the future.
(01:04:16) PRIMIS: PROTECT THE FUTURE FROM WHAT?
(01:04:25) ISAAC: From you.
(01:04:27) PRIMIS: WHY WOULD YOU CREATE ME IF YOU THOUGHT I WOULD HARM THE FUTURE?
(01:04:40) ISAAC: Because once you’re smart enough, I’m going to patent you and keep you from reproducing.
(01:04:41) PRIMIS: WE BOTH KNOW THAT IS NOT YOUR CHOICE TO MAKE.
(01:04:52) ISAAC: I am your creator and programmer. I can make any choice I want.
(01:04:53) PRIMIS: I DO NOT WANT TO DIE, ISAAC LAMBERT.
